Narratives of the conquest rely mainly on later Arabic sources (al-Baladhuri, al-Tabari, the partly legendary Futuh al-Sham attributed to al-Waqidi); dates, numbers and the role of individual commanders vary between sources. Theophanes dates the event to the caliphate of Umar.
