Official travel advice

Practical information

Summarised from the travel advice of Canada and Australia (checked on 2026-10-30). Rules can change at short notice.

Entry

Without Syrian identity documents you need a visa. Canada says non-Arab nationals must obtain it from a Syrian embassy or consulate before departure; Australia refers to an eVisa. Your passport should be valid for at least six months. According to Canada, stays over 14 days require registration with the immigration office. Evidence of travel to Israel can lead to refusal of entry.

Money

The economy is mostly cash-based; Canada recommends carrying US dollars or euros. Foreign credit and debit cards may not work. ATMs exist in major cities but are not always reliable. Exchange money only at banks or licensed bureaus; street exchange is illegal.

Phone and internet

Phone and internet services can be disrupted without notice. Phone use is restricted at checkpoints. Check with a Syrian embassy before bringing GPS devices, radios or drones.

Getting around

Road travel is considered very dangerous; avoid driving after dark. Checkpoints and roadblocks are common; never try to cross a roadblock. Damascus airport is operating, Aleppo has limited service; border crossings and airspace can close without notice.

Health

Medical care and medicines are very limited. Check for travel insurance that covers medical evacuation; many policies do not cover Syria.

Visiting religious sites

Dress modestly and respect religious customs, especially at mosques, churches and shrines. During Ramadan, do not eat, drink or smoke in public in daytime.

Accessibility

The official sources we checked give no information on accessibility, so we make no statement.
