Religious communities

Mandaeans are a religious community historically centred in Iraq. After 2003 many Iraqi Mandaeans took refuge in Syria and Jordan; about 1,000 were reported to remain in Syria in 2015.

The Mandaean community of Iraq collapsed after the 2003 invasion, and most members relocated to Iran, Syria and Jordan; in early 2007 more than 80 percent of Iraqi Mandaeans were refugees in Syria and Jordan.

Sources and details

Syria is a place of refuge rather than a historic homeland of the community.

About 1,000 Mandaeans were reported to remain in Syria in 2015 (Mandaean Human Rights Group submission, estimate). No Mandaean sites in Syria were found.
