One of the earliest battles whose course is known in detail: chariot armies of Ramesses II and the Hittite king Muwatalli II clashed on the Orontes plain near Kadesh. Egyptian monuments present it as a triumph, but the result was a stalemate that eventually led to one of the oldest known peace treaties.
